About Melanie Coppola [aka Highflying Marketers]

Melanie CoppolaWelcome to Highflying Marketers! Let me tell you how this site can help you build the marketing career of your dreams.

If you’re like most marketing, communications or business graduates, or even if you’ve been working for a couple of years, the prospect of navigating through the many career paths available to you, can feel mystifying, if not overwhelming.

Is it better to specialise in a particular area of marketing such as corporate communications, product marketing, public relations, events management, digital marketing, advertising, social media (and the list goes on…) or is it better to be a generalist? Is it better to get agency experience, look for in-house roles or try freelancing? Are there more opportunities in large or small companies?

And then there are the tools – how do you keep on top of the many tools, platforms and apps available to marketers today?

I know it can all feel a bit mind-boggling. I’ve been down many paths in my career as a marketer, and can help you create the marketing career of your dreams.

So who am I?

I’m Melanie Coppola, a marketing and communications strategist with over 15 years international experience. I’ve held a number of senior positions in the technology, media, publishing, wellness and tourism sectors, across a range of marketing disciplines.

I’ve worked in Australia and the UK for global public companies such as Dow Jones and TechnologyOne, represented clients such as Oracle and Toshiba, and worked in SMEs, startups and my own marketing consultancy. I’ve lectured in marketing and developed my own accredited marketing workshops.

I’m currently the Marketing Communications Manager for Australia’s largest enterprise software company, where I lead a team of writers, digital marketers, designers and agencies responsible for the company’s marketing communications, public relations, investor relations and internal communications programs.

My view on the importance of lifelong learning

One of my guiding beliefs is that I am 100% responsible for creating my career and my life. You can expect to see a lot about this in my posts! I’m passionate about personal and professional development, and spend much of my spare time learning.

I’ve got a few formal qualifications:

  • Masters of Arts in Journalism (UTS)
  • Bachelor of Business Degree majoring in marketing (UTS)
  • Cert IV in Training & Assessment
  • Diploma of Photography

And some certifications:

I’m also currently working through a range of online courses, which I’ll review here as I complete them.

I’ve been a member of the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) and a Certified Practicing Marketer (CPM) since 2003. I’ve been a member of the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) since 2014, and truly believe that associations like these play an important role in helping to develop us and our industry.

Oddly enough, I have some qualifications in massage and holistic therapies too. I would never have thought they’d have assisted my marketing career, but I’ll share how they did just that, in a future post:

  • BTEC Professional Diploma Course in Holistic Massage Practice
  • Cert IV in Massage Therapy Practice
  • TouchPro Chair Massage Certification

My learning doesn’t stop there. With an endless passion for knowledge, I:

  • Listen to an average of 10 podcasts a week
  • Scan 100+ blogs per week
  • Do something for the first time every week
  • Read at least one new book a month

From my experience, I can tell you that no one will care more about your career than you do (and should) – so the onus is on YOU to make it awesome. When you become a lifelong learner, you future-proof your career and create a more awesome, fulfilling life. I hope this site becomes one of your favourite resources on how to get ahead in your marketing career!

Here are 50 marketing and writing books, podcasts and online programs which have really helped to shape my current view of marketing, and which you may also find useful.

A bit more about me

Mel and Michael

My husband Michael and I

As much as I love my job, it’s not all about work! I grew up in Sydney with parents who instilled a love of travelling in me from an early age. I did my first overseas trip when I was eight and I’ve visited 49 countries since. The bug bit me hard, and Antarctica and South America are still high on my Bucket List.

London was my home for nearly four years, during which time I worked full time in Dow Jones’ public relations and media consulting teams, travelled like a woman possessed and trained as a massage therapist in my spare time. As you do.

When I returned to Australia in June 2008, I moved to Brisbane and set up a marketing consultancy that helped massage therapists market their businesses. After a couple of years of working solo (and out of the living room of my one bedroom apartment), I headed back into corporate marketing roles. I discovered that I preferred the energy and teamwork of corporate life. I’ve continued to run various blogs and social media projects on the side – as always, it’s about learning by doing!

I’m a mad keen photographer, foodie and cat lover. In 2012, I married Michael, another mad keen photographer, foodie and cat lover, under a beautiful tree in Saltram’s vineyard in the Barossa Valley. We both shoot with Canon gear, and Saltram’s Winemakers Selection Shiraz Tempranillo will always be our favourite wine! There has to be some reward for a hard day’s work, right?
